One of our favorite shopping places as children was going “down” to Haifa’s “Hamshbir”, which was then (long ago…) the biggest department store in the area. Little did I know that this institution, founded in 1916 during World War I due to the horrible economic situation that the “Yishuv” (settlers) in the Land of Israel were in, was named by Berl Katznelson who was inspired by Joseph in this week’s Torah portion.

כשהיינו ילדים, אחד המקומות שאהבנו ללכת אליהם, היה “המשביר לצרכן” בחיפה, שהיה, אי אז, לפני שנים רבות (…) החנות הכי גדולה בעיר. לא היה לי שמץ מושג שמוסד זה, נוסד ב-1916 בזמן מלחמת העולם הראשונה, כדי להתמודד עם המצב הכלכלי הקשה אליו נחשף הישוב אז, וששמו ניתן לו ע”י ברל כצנלסון, בהשראת יוסף בפרשה זו.

Joseph is described the “Mashbir”, the one who “dispenses rations”, as we find in Genesis 42:6:

יוסף הוא המתואר כ”המשביר”, זה שנותן אוכל לכולם, כפי שנמצא בבראית מב:ו:

וְיוֹסֵ֗ף ה֚וּא הַשַּׁלִּ֣יט עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ ה֥וּא הַמַּשְׁבִּ֖יר לְכׇל־עַ֣ם הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אֲחֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־ל֥וֹ אַפַּ֖יִם אָֽרְצָה׃

Now Joseph was the vizier of the land; it was he who dispensed rations to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed low to him, with their faces to the ground.

Just a little earlier, we find that root again (Genesis 42:1-2):

רק קצת קודם מצאנו את אותו השורש שוב (מב:א-ב)

וַיַּ֣רְא יַעֲקֹ֔ב כִּ֥י יֶשׁ־שֶׁ֖בֶר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ לְבָנָ֔יו לָ֖מָּה תִּתְרָאֽוּ׃ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֣ה שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֥י יֶשׁ־שֶׁ֖בֶר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם רְדוּ־שָׁ֙מָּה֙ וְשִׁבְרוּ־לָ֣נוּ מִשָּׁ֔ם וְנִחְיֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א נָמֽוּת׃

When Jacob saw that there were food rations to be had in Egypt, he^aLit. “Jacob.” said to his sons, “Why do you keep looking at one another? Now I hear,” he went on, “that there are rations to be had in Egypt. Go down and procure rations for us there, that we may live and not die.”

In fact, the same root, sh.b.r repeats in this chapter – coincidentally – 10 times! Often used as “break”, its meaning stretches further and is used for two other seemingly unrelated word-themes: one is, the birthing mother sits on the “mashber” – the birthing stool, or perhaps also, the birthing moment / point just before birth, right before the emergence of the baby to the world. The other is the tip of the waves before crushing. That we find in the Psalms (for Friday, 93:4):

למעשה, אותו שורש, ש.ב.ר, שחוזר בפרק זה – במקרה? – 10 פעמים! ומשמש אותנו עד היום לשבירה פירוק של דברים, משמעותו נמתחת יותר ומשמשת לשני דברים אחרים שלכאורה אינם קשורים כלל: האחד הוא, האם היולדת יושבת על ה”משבר” – שרפרף הלידה, או אולי גם, רגע הלידה, ממש לפני הופעת התינוק לעולם. השני הוא קצה הגלים לפני הריסוק. כפי שאנו מוצאים בתהילים (ליום שישי, צ”ג, ד):

מִקֹּל֨וֹת ׀ מַ֤יִם רַבִּ֗ים אַדִּירִ֣ים מִשְׁבְּרֵי־יָ֑ם אַדִּ֖יר בַּמָּר֣וֹם ה’׃

Above the thunder of the mighty waters, more majestic than the breakers of the sea, is the LORD, majestic on high.

There is something about all these incidences that conveys a moment of holding great tension that is just about the be broken into a better outcome, if yet unknown. It also relates to us always reading about Joseph on Shabbat Hanukkah, and the lights illuminating the darkness. This is one the very few Shabbatot in the year that we read from not one, or two, but three (!) scrolls in shul. It also holds the longest “benching”, blessing after the meal: regular, Shabbat, Hanukkah & Rosh Hodesh Tevet. May all these lights help us find our way. יש משהו בכל הצירופים האלה שמשדר רגע של החזקה במתח גדול שעומד להשבר על מנת להתפרק לתוצאה טובה יותר, להפתח למשהו חדש, לא ידוע, שיתברר כנפלא. זה גם קשור גם לכך שאנחנו תמיד קוראים על יוסף בשבת חנוכה, ועל האורות המאירים את החושך, ממש דקה לפני שהכל נדמה אבוד לגמרי. זוהי אחת השבתות המעטות בשנה שאנו קוראים ממנה לא אחת, או שתיים, אלא שלוש (!) תורות בבית הכנסת. ובו גם נשיר את ברכת המזון הארוכה בשנה: ברכה רגילה, שבת, חנוכה וראש חודש טבת. מי יתן וכל האורות הללו יעזרו לנו למצוא את דרכנו. שבת שלום, חנוכה שמח וחודש טוב.
