אין לי מה ללבוש! מאז ימי גן עדן אנחנו מתלבטים מה ללבוש. עבור הכהן הגדול בפרשת השבוע, תצוה, מדובר בהפקה לא קטנה עם 8 פריטי בגדים שהוא אמור ללבוש בעת שירותו במשכן ובהמשך, בבית המקדש.

I have nothing to wear!! Ever since the days of the Garden of Eden, we struggle with what to wear. For the High Priest in this week’s Torah portion, Tetzave, it is quite a production with 8 pieces of garments he was to wear when serving in the Tabernacle, the Mishkan and later, in the Temple.

נשאלת השאלה, מכיוון שהקב”ה יכול היה לעשות הכל, מדוע נוצרו בני אדם ללא פרווה? זה היה מועיל לי במיוחד כשגרתי בחורף של ניו יורק… ואף על פי כן, גם במקומות שבהם מזג האוויר מושלם, אנחנו, בני האדם, עדיין לובשים משהו, אפילו אם מינימלי.

The question is, since G-d could have done anything, why were humans created without a fur? This would have been incredibly useful for me while living in NY… and yet, even in places where the weather is perfect, we (humans) still wear something, if minimal.

בהתחלה, אדם והאישה היו עירומים. לא הייתה בושה ולא צורך בכיסוי. אחר כך הם הכינו לעצמם חגורות של עלי תאנה, ובהמשך קבלו מהקב”ה “כותנות עור” (בראשית ג:כא) לפני היציאה מגן עדן, יש אומרים, במקום לבוש ה”אור” שהיה להם עד כה.

In the beginning, the Man and the Woman were naked. There was no shame and no covering was needed. Then they made for themselves belts of fig leaves, and later on, received from G-d “garments made of skin (or leather)” (Genesis 3:21), before leaving Gan Eden, some say, given to them by G-d instead of the “light” covering they had so far (in Hebrew, “or” is both leather and light, spelled differently).

כמה מהמילים בעברית עבור לבוש קשורות לבגידה. השורש ב.ג.ד עשוי מהאותיות הרצופות ב.ג.ד. איפה האלף? האלף הדוממת שלעיתים מייצגת את “מכתב אלוהים” שקטה, מוסתרת. הרב הירש מחבר בין השורש ב.ג.ד ל-פ.ק.ד שאותו הוא מגדיר כ”להשקיע במטרה או באחריות”. מהשורש הזה אנחנו יוצרים את המילה פקודה, ומפקד. לחילופין, אם אדם לא ממלא את אחריותו, כגון חייל ש”נוטש” את הבסיס, הוא יקרא “נפקד”, שנעדר ממילוי מינויו. גם המילה “מעיל” קשורה למעילה, רמאות, ולבוש – לשורש של המילה בושה. הלבוש שלנו יכול לעזור לנו להיות ולהבליט את מי שאנחנו, כמו גם להסתיר ולהציג קליפה מזויפת.

Interestingly, a few of the Hebrew words for clothing, have to do with betrayal: ב.ג.ד. – begged – is unique as it is made of the three consecutive letters: ב.ג.ד. bet, gimmel, dalet, the 2nd, 3rd & 4th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Where is the first, the alef? The silent alef, which is often “G-d’s letter”, is silent, hidden. Rav Hirsch connects ב.ג.ד. b.g.d. with פ.ק.ד. p.k.d, which he defines as “invest with purpose or responsibility”. From this root we create פקודה “pkuda”, an order or army command; and מפקד mefaked, a commander. Alternatively, if one does not fulfill their responsibility such as a soldier who “ditches” base, s/he will call נפקד “nifkad”, absent from fulfilling his appointment. The word “me’il” for coat, is connected to the word “me’ila”, cheating, deception, and “levush”, clothing, to “busha”, embarrassment. Our clothing can help us be and express who we are, as well as show a phony covering.  

בשנה שאינה מעוברת, פרשת תצווה נקראת סמוך לפורים, ומזכירה לנו את האורות והצללים במגילת (מלשון גילוי) אסתר (…). השנה, פורים מתעכב עוד חודש, אך ביום שלישי נוכל לחגוג “פורים קטן”. אין ממש מנהגים מיוחדים לפורים קטן, מלבד שמשמיטים את קטעים “עצובים” יחסית (תחנון ווידוי) המזכירים חטאים ועוונות. יש שעורכים משתה ושמחה גם בפורים קטן, ויש שלא נוהגים כך, אבל אפשר וכדאי להרבות קצת בסעודה. והעיקר, לחשוב… מה נלבש לפורים???

When it’s not a leap year, the Torah portion of Tetzave is read near Purim, reminding us the lights and shadows of the Megillah (related to “revelation”) of Esther (“hidden”). Purim is still a month away, but on Tuesday we can celebrate “Purim Katan”, a small Purim. There are no real customs except dropping some sadder parts of the daily prayer. Some hold a feast and some don’t, but it is possible to have a little larger meal, and mostly, start thinking, what should we wear for Purim???
