Turns out that I’m doing my Shabbat food shopping at the supermarket in Ariel, in the heart of the Shomron. Having spent too many hours reading too many opinions regarding Ben & Jerry’s last move, I’m pretty shocked to find their chocolate-chip-cookie-dough peacefully smiling at me from the store’s fridge. What happened? Are these some leftovers?? Oh no. Israel’s Ben & Jerry’s decided to go against the global company and continue selling their ice-cream throughout the country; many places have announced their support… Wait, then… I should have bought it?? Why does everything about being Jewish need a Talmudic tractate of pros and cons to figure it out…

יוצא שאני עושה את קניות השבת שלי בסופר באריאל. אחרי שביליתי יותר מדי שעות בקריאת יותר מדי דעות בנוגע למהלך האחרון של בן אנד ג’ריס, אני די המומה לגלות שגלידת השוקולד-צ’יפס שלהם מחייכת אלי בשלווה מהמקרר של החנות. מה קרה? האם מדובר בשאריות ?? לא ולא. זכיינית בן אנד ג’ריס בישראל החליטה לצאת נגד החברה העולמית ולהמשיך למכור את הגלידה שלהם ברחבי הארץ. מקומות רבים הודיעו על תמיכתם … רגע, אז … הייתי צריכה לקנות אותה ?? למה כל דבר בקשר להיותנו יהודים זקוק למסכת תלמודית של בעד ונגד כדי להבין מה קורה…

While the US community “screams for ice-ream”, it’s pretty small news here. ‘Oh, you want to boycott us’?? people yawn, ‘the line of those who are against us is really long and we might not get to you any time soon. If you’d like our attention, stand in the other line’….

בעוד הקהילה האמריקאית קוראת בחום לגלידה, כאן, אלה חדשות די קטנות. ‘אה, רוצים להחרים אותנו’ ?? אנשים מפהקים, ‘התור של מי שנגדנו ארוך ממש ארוך ואולי לא נגיע אליך בזמן הקרוב. אם תרצה את תשומת ליבנו, תעמוד בתור ממול’….

We’re in the days between the 9^th and the 15^th of Av – between the saddest day of the year, when we commemorate the destruction of the Temple and so many tragedies throughout our history, and the day marking peace, comfort, love and happiness, often described a “Jewish Valentine’s Day”. Nothing needs to be added to the words of the Mishna (Ta’anit 4:8):

אנחנו בימים שבין ט’ לט”ו באב – בין היום העצוב ביותר בשנה, בו אנו מציינים את חורבן בית המקדש וכל כך הרבה טרגדיות לאורך ההיסטוריה שלנו, לבין היום שמציין שלום, נחמה, אהבה ואושר, יום שמתואר לעתים קרובות כ”יום האהבה היהודי”. נדמה שאין צורך להוסיף שום דבר לדברי המשנה (תענית ד, ח):

Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: There were no days as joyous for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av and as Yom Kippur, as on them the daughters of Jerusalem would go out in white clothes, which each woman borrowed from another. Why were they borrowed? They did this so as not to embarrass one who did not have her own white garments…. And the daughters of Jerusalem would go out and dance in the vineyards. And what would they say? Young man, please lift up your eyes and see what you choose for yourself for a wife. Do not set your eyes toward beauty, but set your eyes toward a good family, as the verse states: “Grace is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30), and it further says: “Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates” (Proverbs 31:31). And similarly, it says in another verse: “Go forth, daughters of Zion, and gaze upon King Solomon, upon the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, and on the day of the gladness of his heart” (Song of Songs 3:11). This verse is explained as an allusion to special days: “On the day of his wedding”; this is the giving of the Torah through the second set of tablets on Yom Kippur. The name King Solomon in this context, which also means king of peace, is interpreted as a reference to God. “And on the day of the gladness of his heart”; this is the building of the Temple, may it be rebuilt speedily in our days.

אָמַר רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל, לֹא הָיוּ יָמִים טוֹבִים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל כַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר בְּאָב וּכְיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים, שֶׁבָּהֶן בְּנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם יוֹצְאוֹת בִּכְלֵי לָבָן שְׁאוּלִין, שֶׁלֹּא לְבַיֵּשׁ אֶת מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ….. וּבְנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם יוֹצְאוֹת וְחוֹלוֹת בַּכְּרָמִים. וּמֶה הָיוּ אוֹמְרוֹת, בָּחוּר, שָׂא נָא עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה, מָה אַתָּה בוֹרֵר לָךְ. אַל תִּתֵּן עֵינֶיךָ בַנּוֹי, תֵּן עֵינֶיךָ בַמִּשְׁפָּחָה. שֶׁקֶר הַחֵן וְהֶבֶל הַיֹּפִי, אִשָּׁה יִרְאַת ה’ הִיא תִתְהַלָּל (משלי לא). וְאוֹמֵר, תְּנוּ לָהּ מִפְּרִי יָדֶיהָ, וִיהַלְלוּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִים מַעֲשֶׂיהָ. וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר, צְאֶינָה וּרְאֶינָה בְּנוֹת צִיּוֹן בַּמֶּלֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה בָּעֲטָרָה שֶׁעִטְּרָה לּוֹ אִמּוֹ בְּיוֹם חֲתֻנָּתוֹ וּבְיוֹם שִׂמְחַת לִבּוֹ (שיר השירים ג . בְּיוֹם חֲתֻנָּתוֹ, זֶה מַתַּן תּוֹרָה. וּבְיוֹם שִׂמְחַת לִבּוֹ, זֶה בִּנְיַן בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, שֶׁיִּבָּנֶה בִמְהֵרָה בְיָמֵינוּ. אָמֵן:

If we lived in Temple times, this would have been a weeklong holiday, with the 9^th of Av being the start and Tu Be’Av, the 15^th being the last day, sort of like Passover and Sukkot. The destruction is what turned the 9^th upside down, but prophecies say that one day, as we may see already, this decree will be overturned back, fulfilling the potential for goodness, wellbeing and immense joy, that is still there.

אם היינו חיים בימי בית המקדש, זה היה שבוע של חג, כאשר ט ‘באב היה ההתחלה וט”ו באב, היום האחרון, כמו פסח וסוכות. החורבן הוא מה שהפך את תשעה באב, אך נבואות אומרות שיום אחד, כפי שאנחנו יכולים כבר לראות, הגזירה הזו תתהפך בחזרה, והפוטנציאל לטוב, רווחה ושמחה עצומה, שעדיין שם, יתקיים.

Some say, that this is the day the world’s creation as declared. How so? Because Rosh Hashana is the day the first human was born; which means the world was created on the 25^th of Elul, and there’s an idea that 40 days before someone is born, there is already a bat-kol, a heavenly voice announcing their future arrival. This day would be – the 15^th of Av. Some start wishing each other “ketiva vachatimah tovah, to be inscribed and sealed for a good future. And another custom is to increase Torah learning, as the nights once again are longer and some say, nights are good for learning Torah.

יש האומרים, שזה היום בו בריאת העולם הוכרזה. איך זה? מכיוון שראש השנה הוא היום בו נברא האדם הראשון; מה שאומר שהעולם עצמו נברא בכ”ה באלול. יש רעיון ש -40 יום לפני שמישהו נולד, יש כבר בת-קול שמימית המכריזה על הגעתו העתידית. יום זה הוא ט”ו באב. יש כאלה שביום הזה מתחילים לאחל אחד לשני “כתיבה וחתימה טובה”. ומנהג נוסף הוא להגדיל את לימוד התורה, כיוון שהלילות שוב ארוכים יותר ויש האומרים, שהלילה טוב ללימוד תורה.

This Shabbat we’re also reading from the Torah portion of Va’etchanan, including things like Moses’ plea to enter the Land, the repetition of the Ten Commandments, the Shma and the special wisdom that… how did Moses know already then?? (4:1-5):

בשבת זו אנו נקרא גם מפרשת “ואתחנן”, כולל תחנוניו של משה להיכנס לארץ, עשרת הדיברות השניים, “שמע ישראל”, והחוכמה המיוחדת ש… איך ידע משה כבר אז?? (פרק ד, 1-5):

And now, O Israel, give heed to the laws and rules that I am instructing you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you…. Observe them faithfully, for that will be proof of your wisdom and discernment to other peoples, who on hearing of all these laws will say, “Surely, that great nation is a wise and discerning people.”…

וְעַתָּ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל שְׁמַ֤ע אֶל־הַֽחֻקִּים֙ וְאֶל־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָֽנֹכִ֛י מְלַמֵּ֥ד אֶתְכֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת לְמַ֣עַן תִּֽחְי֗וּ וּבָאתֶם֙ וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר ה’ אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם נֹתֵ֥ן לָכֶֽם….   וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֮ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֒ כִּ֣י הִ֤וא חׇכְמַתְכֶם֙ וּבִ֣ינַתְכֶ֔ם לְעֵינֵ֖י הָעַמִּ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשְׁמְע֗וּן אֵ֚ת כׇּל־הַחֻקִּ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְאָמְר֗וּ “רַ֚ק עַם־חָכָ֣ם וְנָב֔וֹן הַגּ֥וֹי הַגָּד֖וֹל הַזֶּֽה”…

It’s a Shabbat of comfort as is indicated by the haftara from Isaiah 40, 1-11, that opens with Nachamu, nachamu ami, “be comforted my people”, and the Shabbat that opens our prep for the upcoming Shmita (Land Sabbatical) year here. May we feel some of this potential and joy within ourselves and around us.

זוהי שבת של נחמה כפי שמצוין בהפטרה מספר ישעיהו (מ:1-11) שנפתחת בנחמו, בנחמו עמי, והשבת שפותחת את הכנתנו לשנת השמיטה הקרבה פה. הלואי ונרגיש את הפוטנציאל והשמחה הזו בתוכנו ובסביבנו.
